"The silent majority of Muslims want to find a voice and not to leave the voice of Islam only
to the conservative,
so-called observant Muslims. We have arrived at the moment when there's enough people who have not spoken who feel it's time to speak, that I think we'll see quite the transformation, and we'll hear a whole variety of issues… and I think among them is a critique of a certain kind of Islam that even in some remote way lends support to terrorism."

Biography

Leila Ahmed's 1992 book Women and Gender in Islam is often seen as the authoritative text on the subject. She is currently at work on a project aimed at fostering inclusion of diverse voices in the debate among Muslim Americans on issues relating to women, gender and sexuality. It will be the first project to map the spectrum of Muslim views on these issues, and to focus on U.S. Muslim organizations.
